Ok. So I saw Scream 4 last night. I have been waiting and waiting and waiting to see this movie since I first found they were making it. To be able to see the original 3 back on screen together again was exciting for me. Well….that excitement quickly got squashed for me. I’m not going to give any spoilers away in regards to the story and ending just FYI. So it is safe to read on.
First off….where was Dewey?! What I mean is, that was not the same corky, and sometimes, dumb Dewey we all know and love. I know he is chief of police in this one….but that should not have made any difference. Plus, where the hell was his limp? He got stabbed in the back in 1 and 2. He explains in 2 that his limp is caused by a severed nerve. He still had it in 3. So where the hell was it in 4? Did he have surgery to correct it? Did he “walk it” off over the last 11 years? You can’t make that part of a character in 2 films and not have it in the next.
Now on to Gale. I know she’s married to Dewey now and this is her chance to get back in the media game when the murders start, but I was just hoping a little more from her character. Out of the 3 originals, I enjoyed her character more. I don’t have too much to say about her but that’s just my main concern is that I was wanting more out of her.
Now on to my favorite, Sydney. Love her! Love her! Love her in the the first 3. This one….not so much. Her character was made to look like a hypocrite in my opinion. In the 2nd one when she is approached by Cotton to appear with him in an interview with Diane Sawyer, she tells him between the book and the movies….there is enough exposure. Now all of a sudden she’s written a book and going on book tours and interviews across the country making big bucks off of her tragedy and what she did to over come it. REALLY?! The Sydney I grew to love in the first 3 movies would NEVER have used her tragedy to make money. You can tell me it was to help those to overcome their own tragedies but what I hear is “blah blah blah”. That’s bullshit. Sorry. Don’t believe it.
One last rant about Sydney….when did she stop kicking her attackers ass? There was a few good moments of ass kicking but after the beating she gave her brother in the 3rd, you’d think that she would be able to defend herself just a little bit better. There’s something else I REALLY want to share my opinion on but it’s at the end and I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.
The twist at the end was okay, and at first I gasped out of shock, but then I soon realized it was not that believable. After you see the movie and want to know what I think about that, message me and I will tell you. Some people will probably think “Of course it wouldn’t be believable because it’s a movie”, but these movies are as close to believable that you can get. Why? Because it deals with live people who are the killer/killers. Not someone stalking you in your dreams or someone that comes back from the dead one day out of the year. The killer/killers’ supposed be to fucked up in the head crazy.
If you don’t know the history of how Scream was created, then I will make it short. Kevin Williamson saw a documentary on the Gainesville Ripper from Florida while house sitting.
Yes the movie had more kills and more blood. Loved that part of it. Some of the one liners were border line “Scary Movie” type goofy but it wasn’t too bad. It still had that Scream ‘feel’ to it but it could have been A LOT better than what was delivered. Trust me….it pains me to “speak” ill of this movie. I love the trilogy, the director and the creator for his brilliant mind in writing such an epic original, but it just seemed like he lost his mojo when writing this one. Now I have heard there were some re-writes by Ehren Krueger but I’m not sure on that.
Maybe if I see it again my opinion might change but I probably won’t see it again until it comes out on Blu-Ray. Will I own it? Of course I will. It’s part of the franchise. Do I think it’s one of the better sequels? No. It’s my least favorite.
These are just my opinions and I hope that anyone who reads this will respect my opinion and not get upset by what I have said up above. Overall, I enjoyed it for what what shown to me but I think it could have been A LOT better.
